Handheld Gaming PCs: Steam Deck vs ROG Ally vs Legion Go

Handheld gaming PCs are everywhere now. They look like a Nintendo Switch, but they run your actual PC games: your Steam library, your Epic freebies, sometimes even Game Pass. The question is which one to buy, and for Indian players, whether you can even buy it properly.

Here’s how the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and Lenovo Legion Go compare, what they cost, and the availability problems you need to know about before spending this much money.

Steam Deck OLED

The Steam Deck is the handheld that started the boom, and it’s still the easiest to use.

What’s good:

  • SteamOS just works. It boots straight into your Steam library and feels like a console.
  • Great OLED screen with deep blacks and vivid colors.
  • Huge community support. Steam shows a “Verified” rating so you know which games run well.
  • Excellent battery life compared to many Windows handhelds in lighter games.

What’s not:

  • Not sold officially in India. Valve doesn’t sell the Steam Deck through Steam in India, so Indian buyers rely on imports or resellers.
  • No official warranty support in India. If it breaks, repairs are harder.
  • Higher prices in 2026. Valve raised Steam Deck prices in May 2026 because of higher memory and storage costs. In the US, the 1TB OLED went from $649 to $949. The cheaper LCD model has been discontinued.
  • Some games don’t work. Online games with certain anti-cheat systems don’t run on SteamOS.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X

ASUS teamed up with Microsoft to make these Windows handhelds with an Xbox-style full screen experience.

What’s good:

  • Sold officially in India. At launch in October 2025, the ROG Xbox Ally started at ₹69,990 and the Ally X at ₹1,14,990, through ASUS stores, Vijay Sales, Amazon and the ASUS e-shop.
  • Local warranty and service. A huge advantage for an expensive device.
  • Runs Windows, so it supports Steam, Epic, Game Pass, Battle.net and more.
  • Powered by AMD Ryzen Z2 series chips, with the Ally X aimed at higher performance.

What’s not:

  • Windows on a small screen can still feel clunkier than SteamOS, even with the Xbox interface.
  • The Ally X is expensive, close to the price of a good gaming laptop.

Lenovo Legion Go 2

Lenovo’s handheld is the big-screen option.

What’s good:

  • Large 8.8-inch OLED screen at 144Hz, the biggest of the three.
  • Detachable controllers, like a Nintendo Switch, plus a mouse-like mode on one controller.
  • Up to a Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip and up to 32GB of memory.
  • A SteamOS edition is available in some markets, alongside the Windows version.

What’s not:

  • Big and heavy, which makes long handheld sessions more tiring.
  • Expensive. In the US, the Windows version started at $1,099.99.
  • India availability can vary. Lenovo sold the original Legion Go officially in India, so check Lenovo India and major retailers for the Legion Go 2’s current status and price.

Buying in India: What You Need to Know

Official vs import: Only buy a handheld through official channels if you can. Official devices come with local warranty, GST invoices and service centers.

Imported devices: If you import a Steam Deck or buy from a reseller, expect:

  • Higher prices after customs duties and reseller margins
  • No official warranty in India
  • A different charger plug in some cases
  • Difficult and expensive repairs

Check the seller carefully. Grey market listings with prices that look too good to be true are a scam risk. Ask for proof of purchase, check reviews and avoid paying through untraceable methods.

Before You Buy Any Handheld

  • Check your games. Make sure your most played games run well, especially online games with anti-cheat.
  • Think about storage. Big games fill small drives quickly. A microSD card helps.
  • Consider a gaming laptop or cloud gaming. For the same money, a gaming laptop can be more powerful. And if you mostly want to play on the go with a good connection, GeForce Now and other cloud services can be a cheaper option.
