How to Get Free PC Games Legally (Epic, Amazon, Steam and More)

Free PC games are everywhere if you know where to look. Not cracked, not “100% safe download, trust me bro,” but real games given away legally by the stores and companies that sell them.

Some of these giveaways include big names. Claim them once and they’re yours to keep. Here’s where to find them, how to claim them, and how to avoid the fake “free game” sites that spread malware.

Epic Games Store: Free Games Every Week

This is the best source of free PC games, by far.

Epic gives away one or more games every week. The free games change every Thursday, which is Thursday evening in India. Once you claim a game, it stays in your library forever, even after the promotion ends.

How to claim:

  1. Create a free Epic Games account.
  2. Open the Epic Games Store website or launcher.
  3. Find the Free Games section on the store’s home page.
  4. Click the game and select Get.

You don’t have to download the game right away. Claiming it is enough.

December bonus: Epic usually runs a holiday promotion in late December with a free game every day for a couple of weeks. It’s the best time of year to build your library.

Amazon Prime: Free Games Through Luna

If you have Amazon Prime, you may be able to claim free PC games every month. Amazon used to run this through Prime Gaming, but those benefits moved to Amazon Luna in late 2025.

Amazon announces a monthly lineup and adds games weekly, usually on Thursdays. The games are claimed through Amazon and then redeemed on stores like the Epic Games Store, GOG or the Amazon Games app.

Availability can vary by country, so check the Luna and Prime pages for your region to see what you can claim.

Steam: More Than You’d Expect

Steam has a few ways to play for free:

  • Free-to-play games: CS2, Dota 2, Apex Legends, Warframe and many more are free to download and play.
  • Free weekends: Some paid games are free to play for a few days. You can’t keep them, but it’s a great way to try before you buy, and they’re often discounted at the same time.
  • Free-to-keep promotions: Now and then, a game is made free to add to your library permanently for a limited time.
  • Demos: Many games have free demos, especially during Steam Next Fest.

Tip: Follow the Steam store’s specials section, or use a deal tracking site, so you don’t miss free-to-keep promotions. They often last only a few days.

GOG

GOG occasionally gives away free games, often classics. GOG games are DRM-free, which means once you download them, they work without a launcher.

itch.io

itch.io is full of free indie games, from tiny experiments to surprisingly polished projects. It’s a great place to find something different, and many developers offer “pay what you want” pricing where you can choose to pay nothing.

Publisher Giveaways

Publishers like Ubisoft sometimes run their own giveaways through their launchers, especially around anniversaries and events. These are usually announced on their official social media.

Free Through Subscriptions You Might Already Have

If you already pay for a subscription, check what’s included:

  • Xbox Game Pass includes a large library of PC games while you’re subscribed. Our breakdown of Game Pass in Indiaexplains which plan makes sense.
  • Amazon Prime includes the free game lineup through Luna.

These aren’t free if you subscribe only for games, but if you already have them, use them.

How to Avoid Fake “Free Game” Sites

This matters, especially for younger players.

Red flags:

  • Sites offering paid games like GTA 5 or Elden Ring as “free full version downloads”
  • Downloads that need you to disable your antivirus
  • “Generators” that promise free Steam keys or gift cards
  • Sites that ask you to complete surveys or install apps before downloading
  • Free games sent to you by strangers on Discord or Steam

Pirated games and fake download sites are one of the most common ways people get malware, lose their Steam accounts or have their passwords stolen. Our guide on avoiding CS2 skin scams covers how account thieves operate.

The rule is simple: only claim free games from the official store pages. If a website claims to give away a game that’s free nowhere else, it’s not real.

Make Sure Your PC Can Run Them

Before you download a big free game, check that your PC can handle it. Our guide on how to check if your PC can run a gametakes five minutes.
